PEI rating
PEI classes I to V measure glaze wear resistance under abrasion. Class IV covers most commercial floors.
The Porcelain Enamel Institute scale ranks how a glazed surface withstands foot traffic abrasion, from PEI I (walls only, no foot traffic) to PEI V (heavy commercial and public spaces).
PEI III covers residential floors and light commercial use. PEI IV is the usual requirement for hotel lobbies, retail floors and offices. PEI V applies to airports, malls and public concourses with sustained traffic.
The rating applies to the glaze, not the tile body. Unglazed through-body porcelain is graded by different abrasion methods, which is why the TDS lists both surface type and PEI class where relevant.
